The university campus is located in Albany, a city about 100 miles from her home. Like most of the other freshmen, Sue lives in a dormitory on the campus. In the dormitory she shares a room with a roommate named Cindy.
Before they went to the university, Cindy and Sue has never met; but fortunately, she and Cindy get on well with each other. They have a lot in common: both of them have kid brothers back home, both of them enjoy playing volleyball--and for both of them, it is their first time to live apart from their parents.
So how is Sue enjoying being at college? “When I first arrived, I had a great feeling of liberation!” she says. “I have much more freedom than at home. But I have lots of problems too. I have to spend much more time cooking and cleaning when I was at home. And money is a problem: without my parents around, I find I’m very short of money.”
So does she get homesick sometimes? “Yes, of course, I miss my parents, ” she says. “But I’ll survive!” Judging by the smile on her face, it is clear that Sue will do more than just survive as she starts the beginning of independent life.

Air pollution is commonly known as smog in some cities. The dark London smog was described by British writer Evelyn as early as 1  1. Smog developed into a major health hazard by the 20th century. In 1948, 19 people died and thousands were sickened by smog in the small US steel-mill town of Donora, Pennsylvania. In 1952, 2,000 Londoners died of its effects. A second type of smog began reducing air  uality over large cities like Los Angeles in the 1930’s. This smog is caused by combustion in air, truck and airplane engines.

Eventually most pollutants are washed out of the air by rain, snow, fog, or mist, but only after traveling large distances, sometimes across continents. As pollutants build up in the atmospheres, sulfur and nitrogen oxides(氧化硫和氧化氮)are converted into acids that mix with rain. This acid rain falls in lakes and on forests. It can lead to the death of fish and plants, and damage the environment. Eventually the lakes and forests may become lifeless.

D.        In the 1950’s

There are about   billion people living on Planet Earth today. Out of this huge number only about 100 men and women have actually seen what our planet looks like from outer space. This small group of people are the astronauts who have had the privilege to view the world from their spaceships, or from the moon.

For centuries, the rest of us have relied on maps to show us what the world looks like. Maps play a very important role in everyday life. It is not only explorers, long distance lorry drivers and geography teachers and students who use maps. You only have to open a newspaper or watch the news on TV to see how fre uently maps are used to point out the location of a story.

In the past, some of the maps drawn up were not accurate; sometimes they even omitted whole continents. The variety of maps in use today can look  uite different, depending on where they are centered. In Britain, for example, the British are used to seeing world maps centre on Europe, so that the British Isles are in the centre of the map. This gives a rather distorted view of the world.

2 .        Who have seen the world from outer space?
A.        Astronauts.
B.        Explorers.
C.        Drivers.
D.        Teachers and students.

21.        Who use maps?
A.        Nearly everyone.
B.        Astronauts.
C.        Explorers, long distance lorry drivers and geography teachers and students.
D.        200 men and women.

28.        How do ordinary people know what our earth looks like?
A.        Watching TV.
B.        Reading newspaper.
C.        Listening to the radio.
D.        Using map.

29.        What was wrong with maps in the past?
A.        They centered on British Isles.
B.        They centered on Europe.
C.        Some of them were not accurate.
D.        Wrong continents were drawn.

30.        Which of the following statements is not true?
A.        We often use maps in our daily life.
B.        Only a few people have seen the world from outer space.

College is a new and different life for me. I’m away from home, so I have many things to adjust to. Being on my own, talking with friendly people, and having Fridays off (星期五不上课)— these are just some things I like about college. But more importantly, living at college gives me a sense of responsibility (责任感). My parents aren’t around to say “ No, Mary! You’re not going out tonight” or “Did you finish your assignment?” I have to make decisions about everything. I mean I have to cope with all the things on my own. For example, I had to open an account (到银行开户头) , but I didn’t know where the bank was. A friend of mine told me that I could look in the phone book. Yes, that’s an easy way to do what you wanted. I went to the bank and made decisions for myself — whether to have a checking or savings account and whether or not to get a Master card. That is one example of having responsibility.
