答案: There may actually be advantages in the use of phones for a purpose other than conversation. The proliferation of phone apps may help children learn. (It may also lead to a new digital divide between those with lots of apps on their phones and those without.) And for those who are worried that constant mobile phone use by the young might lead to cancer, or perhaps glucose (葡萄糖) absorption in the brain, texting—in which the phone is nowhere near the ear—is obviously an improvement.

You are going to read a passage with 10 statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.
Think inside the box
选项:
答案: A range of products are the obvious result of multiplication, from bifocal lenses and double-sided tape to three-way light bulbs. But multiplication works for services as well. For the College Board, which designs, administers, and scores the SAT, maintaining the validity of its test is a big challenge: Colleges want an entrance exam that is consistent in what it measures from year to year. But how can the College Board gauge (评估) the difficulty of questions before students are actually scored on them? The answer: by including experimental questions in order to assess them for inclusion in future tests. These particular questions are not scored, but students have no way of knowing that, so they spend about 25 minutes of the 225-minute testing period answering zero-value questions. By using multiplication in this way, the College Board is able to offer a new test each year while ensuring that its quality matches that of previous tests.
Division: separate the components of a product or service and rearrange them.
问题 3: 1. (15选10)注意:只需填写选项字母 (要大写!),不要输入选项单词!
Directions: Fill in the blanks in the following passage by selecting suitable words from the word bank. Each word can be used only once.
A. appreciated B. context C. reaction D. comment E. perfection F. admiration G. magnifying H. complexion I. accessories J. achieving K. adhered L. considered M. gorgeous N. absurd O.handsome
I was once in a relationship with a woman who was the most brilliant, creative and driven person I'd ever known. I told her these things often because she didn't see herself this way, despite 1)_______ great success and acclaim (称赞) in her professional field. She was also 2)_______ and sexy, though she seemed not to realize this either, so I told her these things too. But while I thought it was more important to praise her brilliance, it seemed to mean more to her that she was 3)_______ attractive.
My experience with this girlfriend exemplifies a common phenomenon in life – when it comes to complimenting a woman, men often walk a very difficult line. Of course, 4)_______ matters. In a professional setting, talking about appearance is often inappropriate, but at a singles club, it may be important. She will be very pleased if a man thinks her clothes and 5)_______ are pretty, or her hair looks wonderful. However, things in between these two cases are unclear. Women have every right to be recognized and 6)_______ for their intelligence and creativity. But at the same time, they want to be admired for their looks as well, for example, their perfect skin 7)_______ and elegant outfits.
Unfortunately, most guys don't understand this. If we receive compliments from women, they're usually about our achievements, not our looks. Most of us don't expect a woman to tell us how 8)_______ or sexy we are, and some of us would find it hard to regard such a(n) 9)_______ as sincere.
I'm not saying it's very hard to be a guy these days. It is important for every man to understand how to treat women with both respect and 10)_______. But as far as the right balance of these two is concerned, we really have no frame of reference, especially when it comes to looks.

Why too much togetherness can ruin retirement
选项:
答案: Parallel play in a partnership does not suggest extreme emotional separation from each other. If you want to have total freedom, you probably need to examine your motivation. If you have little or no interest in your partner, are you extremely selfish? Narcissistic (自恋的)? Are you unable or unwilling to share? Might you benefit from psychotherapy—either alone or with your mate? Might you really want a divorce? At the other end of the continuum, if you want to be joined at the hip, are you too needy or insecure to manage your life separately at least some of the time? If you crave total attention from your mate, aren't you stifling development for both of you? Haven't you learned it is foolhardy (鲁莽的) to be depressed or jealous if your partner wants to do things alone or with others because those activities can benefit you, too?

When gray days signal a problem
选项:
答案: Often, people with dysthymia only discover they have it when they get much worse, and finally seek treatment and realize they've felt gloomy all their lives. Dan Fields, a 46-year-old medical editor in Framingham, Massachusetts, says he suspected he was depressed in high school but finally sought help when his anger at minor irritations and hypersensitivity to criticism threatened his marriage. I got to the point where I had to get help, he says. A combination of individual and family therapy and antidepressants (抗抑郁药) have helped take the edge off things, and his threshold for annoyances is a lot higher. I can still feel down or furious at times, but I'm less likely to get stuck in these moods, he says.
