Passage 1£®?
I arrived at the railway station earlier than I had expected. As my train was not leaving for another hour, I had plenty of time to spare. After buying some magazines to read on the journey, I went to collect my suitcase I had left there three days before. There were only a few people waiting, and I took out my wallet to find the check for my case. The check did not seem to be where I had left it. I emptied everything from the wallet ¨C railway-tickets, money, cards and photographs, but no matter how hard I searched, the check was nowhere to be found.
When my turn came, I explained the situation sorrowfully to the assistant. The man stared at me as if to say that he had heard this type of story many times and asked me to describe the case. I told him that it was an old, brown-looking object no different from the many cases I could see behind the counter. The assistant then gave me a piece of paper and told me to make a list of the things in the case. If they were correct, he said I could take the case away. I tried to remember all the things I had hurriedly put in the case and wrote them down as they came to me.
After I had done this, I went to look among hundreds of cases for mine. For one dreadful £¨¿Éŵģ© moment, I felt worried that if someone had picked the check up, he could have easily taken the case already. Fortunately, this had not happened, for, after a time, I found my case lying on its side high up in a corner. After examining the things inside, the assistant was soon satisfied that it was mine and told me I could take it away. Again I took out my wallet ¨C this time to pay. I pulled out a ten-dollar note and the ¡°lost¡± check slipped out with it. I could not help blushing £¨Á³ºì£© and looked up at the assistant. He was nodding his head knowingly, as if to say that he had often seen this happen before, too!
